Bayverse: Sky and Ground AU
Barricade, Skywarp, Starscream, Thundercracker
no warnings, just fluff

Barricade had never seen anything so beautiful and he ached that he’d never be able to take part in it. Skywarp and Starscream were tearing across the open sky of the small planet, solar light sparkling off their wings as they spun and wheeled against the backdrop of palest green. They spun in a dizzying spiral, chasing each other, their engines roaring in sheer joy and their own power and skill. His optics were glued to the spectacle, entranced, his head tracking them across the sky, sitting upright, his talons idly plucking at the wiry grass.

“Jealous?” Thundercracker said. The blue jet lounged on the grassy bank beside him.

“No,” Barricade lied. Of course he was. But not enough that he’d let it ruin anything. He’d rather be here, allowed to watch, and feel through the bond, than be anywhere else in the world. He felt the sunlight glossing off armor, cool air cutting over wings he did not have. More than that, though, he felt the pure, fierce, wild joy of flight, as airframes knew it—complete trust and mastery of their element, surrender and yet control, finely balanced. He felt the blaze of confidence, a magnification of the strength he felt from his own engines when he laid the throttle wide open.

Thundercracker tipped his head. “He’d take you up if you asked.”

Barricade’s optics shot over to him for a klik. “Don’t want to interrupt.” He wanted to watch. To feel. Just share any way he could. He did not want Skywarp to have to accommodate him—carry his weight or feel his fear of falling. Here, the ground solid under him, he could enjoy the lift and speed of flight, without the tendrils of fear that always came when he was in the air, especially in atmosphere. This was the best of both worlds for him.

Another long pause, Skywarp and Starscream diving down so low that air from their dive burst against Barricade and Thundercracker, laden with the aroma of burnt fuel and sunwarmed metal.

Skywarp waggled his wingflaps as he looped over for another, slower pass. Barricade responded the only way he knew: sending a burst of golden devotion through the bond, warm and thick and sweet, his mouth straining to contain a smile that bordered on tears at his pride and pleasure at Skywarp’s flight.

“You really love him,” Thundercracker said, his voice a little awed, wonderingly, and, Barricade realized, more than a little envious himself.

Barricade nodded, turning his head to follow the two jets as they whipped across the sky.

“Hunh,” Thundercracker grunted, but Barricade felt something almost like respect tinge the bond.

Thanks! I'm sorry it's so short, because it's a cute scene. Maybe I'll expand it later? I don't think TC will ever LIKE Barricade, but they do have some common ground. I hope.

I think it is a pefect length, short but sweet and highlighting key personality traits in the new Quarterne relationship's dynamics, especially between Barricade & Thundercracker.

I'd like to see what you think would happen if Megatron (or any con from Barricade's 'before') decided to hurt/rape barricade while the three are on mission to get at the seekers as punishment or revenge. if you hate i understand.

This is so beautiful. I love the little snippets of their life you're giving us. I was so sad to see the last chapter of Sky and Ground post up, but these are just as awesome. And hooray for TC finally starting to climb down off his high horse...onto an only slightly shorter horse...

I can't help but think that having a literally grounded 4th is good for those three. Barricade seems just as stubborn as Thundercracker, without the shared emotional baggage (he's got the Fall set; the Seekers collected the Spring line). Some very different perspective, for all of them.

That's actually a really good read on their relationship! I...never really thought it through, but it works!

Yay! I R analyzing! (never managed to read into stories before, at least in HS) LOL It just seems like 'Cade has to be strong to survive what he has and not run screaming from just the level of intensity Seekers bring to everything, let alone their own problems. And Primus knows what it cost them to stand up to TC and say "We're saving your life, dammit. Shut up and take your medicine." And Barricade has already been willing to go toe-to-toe with TC, even though he knows he's hopelessly outclassed.

:shrugs: OK, so I still need work on articulating my ideas. Or coffee. ^_^

I freaking love this series and Love stubborn, prideful Thundercracker. I'd love to see Barricade come under a..problem with other larger mechs, and the only mech to protect him around is TC. Tc says he rather not have anything to do with Barricade, but I can just simply see him topping him because Skywarp's and Starscream's constant nagging at him to get more 'familiar' with him. Or to possibly get stuck somewhere is TOO close quarters with TC, like squished together and stuck like that. Just character building ya know. Anyway, I am a lover of your fics especially sky and ground and have been lurking long enough. xD
